BOTHELL, WA – May 5, 2015 – Today Datalight released a preview version of Reliance Edge™, a power fail-safe file system for FreeRTOS which allows developers building Internet of Things (IoT) devices to reliably store and quickly access data. Reliance Edge is the only file system designed to capture and preserve decision-quality data with the deterministic behavior required by today's autonomous systems. It is a configurable transactional file system specifically for systems where power loss may occur. Reliance Edge can work with a broad array of storage media—including NOR and NAND flash, eMMC, SD/MMC, NVRAM, USB mass storage, and SATA (or PATA) disk. Reliance Edge continues the legacy of file system products in the Datalight Reliance file system family that have delivered proven reliability in hundreds of millions of devices.
According to ABI Research, data captured by IoT connections will top 1.6 zettabytes in 2020. As autonomous systems begin making decisions and taking actions based on stored data, the reliability of that data is critical. Reliance Edge provides safeguards against data corruption and offers deterministic behavior for key file system operations. A transactional file system, Reliance Edge stores data atomically and always maintains a known good state of the file system, allowing fast recovery from power loss.
Reliance Edge can be configured to fit into highly resource-constrained microcontroller-based systems with as little as 4 KB of random access memory (RAM) and 11 KB of code size. The simple, easy-to-understand architecture makes implementation quick and efficient. Using the provided configuration utility, developers can easily experiment with alternatives to support unique environments and use cases.
"Designing a file system which met the high reliability standard set by Reliance Nitro and could fit into tiny microcontroller based systems presented a challenge – and I love a challenge," said Jeremy Sherrill, architect of file systems for Datalight. "Reliance Edge offers a rich set of features in a highly efficient architecture."
The operating system choices for developers of microcontroller-based products are extensive. Datalight chose to introduce the FreeRTOS version of Reliance Edge first due to the large number of developers who have access to the open source project. Datalight plans to release new pre-ported kits for several leading small-kernel operating systems over the coming months.
"The global market penetration enjoyed by FreeRTOS means we are always getting asked to add complementary products to our FreeRTOS+ Ecosystem showcase, so we have to be careful to only select products when we feel they have something special and unique to offer our user base, or they include technology that excites us," said Richard Barry, CTO of Real Time Engineers Ltd. "The design goals and implementation of Reliance Edge means it is no ordinary file system and so ticks in both of those boxes. Reliance Edge will be a valuable resource for our users, so are happy to accept it as an official FreeRTOS+ component."
The new file system, which ships in source code, complies with MISRA C:2012 standard, ensuring high-quality, portable and reliable software.
"We chose to adhere to the high engineering standards embodied in MISRA C:2012 to provide our customers with additional assurance of product quality and code portability," said Ken Whitaker, vice president of engineering for Datalight. "While the standard was developed for the automotive sector, we believe the discipline it instills provides benefits across the embedded industry."
The Reliance Edge preview is available as an open source project via GitHub under the Gnu General Public License (GPL), v2. For those individuals and business who cannot comply with the restrictions of GPL v2, a commercially licensed version will be available later this month from Datalight and authorized resellers.
Developers using the preview version of Reliance Edge will be able to get support via a community forum which will be monitored by Datalight's award-winning technical support team.
